The Pennsylvania Miners' Story (2002）

Based on a true story, The Pennsylvania Miners' Story is just that - the story of nine Pennsylvania miners getting trapped in a flooded mine. Robert plays the miner Mark "Moe" Popernack. The movie starts off with the miners getting off work after a tough day in the mine, and we are introduced to their families. Moe has a wife and two sons. The boys were playing with a ball that then got stuck in a pipe - Moe promises that he will get it out for them the next day.

Moe and his fellow miners head for the mine, starting yet another day of labour underground. However, they hit water that floods the mine, and the nightmare begins. Moe is stranded alone - torrential water separating him from the rest of the mine. As Moe is struggling with ways to get across, his fellow miners are also struggling with the enormous amounts of water that is filling the mine. The miners' families are informed of the accident. Moe's fellow miners find him and succeeds in rescuing him, getting him across the water.

Above ground, rescue efforts have begun in the form of drilling through the ground down to the mine and the trapped miners. Down in the mine, the men are trying to build walls, shielding themselves from the treacherous water. The small drill finally reaches them and pumps down air. However, the miners then have to leave that location as the water closes in on them once again. They all prepare to die, writing one last note to their families and placing their loving letters safely in a bucket.

A new bigger drill begins drilling. It breaks, but fortunately they are able to fix it after a while, and they begin drilling again. The trapped men reflect on death and their impending fate, as their families worry sick above ground. Moe's wife wants a sign from God, and at home she finds her sons' ball out on the lawn.

The miners try desperately to stay warm. Then, after hearing something, they tear down a wall, finding that the drill has gone through. Their families are informed that all nine workers are alive and it is decided that their rescue will be telecast. The rescue basket is lowered, and one by one the miners are hoisted up. Moe, along with the bucket of letters, is the last one up. Finally above ground level, he is met with applause and does thumbs-up.
